    yes, raw edge applique needs fusible interfacing on the object being appliqued. No stabilizer is needed on the background if you are tight up against the edge with your blanket stitch. .......That said..... If the background is weak or soft and wants to buckle try starching it before you consider a washaway stabilizer as a last resort.

    I don't use a "stabilizer" just a regular piece of paper on the back... it pulls off easily and helps stop the puckering on my applique pieces, not to mention cheaper. its just enough that the layers move well together and I don't have any issues.

    On my Bernina, the stitch quality for both my blanket stitch and satin stitch is greatly improved when I use stabilizer. I have used tear away, heat away, and wash away stabilizers with great results. Without it, I have issues with tunneling and inconsistent stitches.
