Make a rag quilt! Put "x's" on the squares. You won't need batting in the middle of it, just 2 layers of flannel.

An all over pattern stipple, straight lines etc would be quick and easy.

The easiest quilting for me is using a walking foot to make wavy lines. There is no need to be exact. This is a very modern approach that is easy and looks good. Tomorrow I can post links to some photos that show what it looks like.

I agree, using painter's tape can make crosshatching done quickly. Depending on the size of the block or pattern, you can make the width between the lines 3" or 4" instead of the traditional 1" or 2".

My first vote would be to tie them. Easter is almost here & that will take long enough. But besides the benefit of it being quick, tying will allow the fleece to maintain its fuzziness. You certainly could do a wide cross hatch (I'd suggest 4", but a minimum of 2" spacing) but that would give you puffy squares rather than a pretty consistently smooth fuzzy backing. You could tie with either yarn or floss. Depending on your color scheme & the age of the children, I've seen people use variegated yarn/floss and it looks really cool. Wish I'd taken a picture, but I have a college friend who got a denim front/flannel backed quilt (as did her 7 siblings) that was tied with rainbow variegated yarn and it was so cool!

Thank you guys so much, I think I will try Jan's in VA her 2nd block of quilting. You all gave me great ideas for the next 2 as well. I like using fleece backing for the softness and the extra savings. Will post pictures as soon as I finish.

many great suggestions... good luck Moxiesmom in getting them all finished. Prism99, great tutorials that I have bookmarked for later and Jan, as always, great suggestions for straight line quilting.
