What I mean is just squares sewn together. Is it quickest to just do strips of random fabrics, cut them, and resew? Would the result be random enough using this method? I have 11 fq and 7 half yards of a line and don't feel like trying to come up with something that will use it up exactly. So I thought maybe just plain patchwork squares would work for a lap size quilt (I will use half for the front, patched, and half for the back, big pieces).

I like to work with 5 inch strips, sew two contrasting strips together, cut them again into 5 inches, flipping them to make a 4 patch.

If you put a strip of white, cream or beige, between your colors you could do a scrappy 9p with alternating plain blocks.
