I have never made a quilt label before and need to make one for a quilt that was just sent off to be quilted. What do you write on it? what to write with? what kind of fabric? Thanks!

Use a cotton fabric, if that is what the quilt is made of. Labels can be just a plain rectangle, or something pieced, some are small works of art in their own right.

Many feel that all quilts should get a label, that way, gerations from now there is some history to go with the quilt.

At a minimum it needs your name, and the date the quilt was finished. If you want add laundering instructions. Dedicate it to someone. I just designed one for a step grandson, and put something like. For Noah, from Pam and Grandpa. 2009 Albion, Illinois.

If this is a quilt you will be putting into shows you may want to consider making a large labels so that you can list all of the shows it was entered in.

If this is a quilt that will be sent off to many shows, please add your address on the quilt, that way everyone knows where it belongs.

Make sure the edges are turned under and it is securely sewn to the back of the quilt. At many shows labels are required.

If you have an embroidery machine, this would be a good spot to use that feature. I write mine with an acid free permanent ink pen that is for scrapbooking.

I like to do mine with my embroidery machine. Before I had it I used a pigma pen.

I have made many labels and I think my favorite was done over at HP.com in thier free printing section. It is a quilt label you can add a picture and words to, save it and print it out onto fabric.

Will the ink stay if it is printed on an inkjet? Would I need the special fabric or could I put wonder under on the bottom and put it through the printer? I really like that idea! They are cute!

permenent markers work, or print and heatset it from the printer, or embroidery, all have been used...matching fabric from quilt, i've actually written my label right on the back of a quilt; embroidered a block with all the info and incorporated it right into the front of the quilt, i tend to add my label before quilting so that it can not just be removed. include name of quilt, your name and whereabouts, the date, fabric content is always a good idea, including the type of batting, sometimes my labels are short, a couple lines, others have been a whole page, story...just put on a label!
