Default FMQ on singer 401

I am trying to FMQ on my 401. I have it going good but that's the problem, it's going--- no matter what I do the machine just takes off and my hands can't keep up and I am barely touching the foot pedal. Don't have this trouble when piecing. If you use this machine for quilting do you have the same problem? I wonder if I could put something on pedal to act as a governor. I only want to use it for small things like runners, etc. I have a domestic on frame for bigger things.

Sounds like your foot control is not adjusted properly. It shouldn't do that. ON a side note, FMQing on 401's is generally not great anyway, due to the raised feed dog plate and the bobbin assembly. I keep my 401 for straight quilting and piecing, but no on the FMQing.
