Hi, all. I am making an Affairs of the Heart quilt. Some other people have posted their squares on here that you can refer to. My question is: How in the world do I quilt this? It's a pretty elaborate appliqué, doesn't leave much room for quilting.

this is a link to the sew along here on the board Affairs of the Heart Cyber-Sew 2011
there may be quilting info there or you might ask the participants as they may have some ideas

The absolute star of this quilt is the applique. If I were to LAQ one I would SID around the applique elements and do a background fill where needed to get the applique to pop. Either fill with pebbling, echo quilting, swirls or some other element. I would quilt in the same color thread as my background fabric so as not to detract in any way from the star of the show.
If I were to hand quilt I would again, SID around the applique and most likely a simple cross hatch in the background where needed in a 1" or smaller grid. Many of the blocks in this quilt don't leave much space for quilting anything but a SID outline of the gorgeous applique and embrodery.
Echo quilting of the applique blocks looks good. Or background fill of heart shaped leaves. As mentioned above, use the same color thread as the background.

I am also doing the Affairs of the Heart, only 1/2 way so far, but I was thinking of echoing around each applique and doing a small heart paisley type of fill in the background. It is really going to be a huge job![]()
What sized blocks did you make? Have you put them together like the one in the book or did you arrange them differently. I'm having a hard time finding the right fabric for the little skinny border around the centre blocks.
I'd love to see your finished top![]()
The biggest risk is the one not taken
Thanks for the advice, everyone.
Hi, woody. My quilt will be nothing like the book as far as the layout goes. It is for a twin size bed. It has light gold backgrounds (2 shades) and the color palate is from the border fabric which I bought first. . purples, teals, golds, greens - all batiks. I enlarged the squares 125%, to about 9 inches. I have in mind a little narrow sashing too. I have 16 squares done, will stop at 20 (4x5) or 24 (4x6). I don't know whether to include some applique in the border or just use the fabric I started with. I'm really loving the project.
