I am currently machine quilting a quilt for a friend on my Tin Lizzie. My friend has been ill for awhile and could not quilt it herself on her DM so I volunteered. She did not give me any directions or input, and said "I know you'll do good". The quilt is a patchwork with applique in alternating blocks. My Question is: When doing pantographs, do you quilt over top of the applique pieces or just outline them and continue on with your pantographs pattern. I don't want to mess this up on her, and I have already ripped out some stitching because I was unsure and didn't care for the way it looked. Any input would be appreciated.

i've seen it done both ways but i do prefer the applique to be outlined to make them pop and background quilting around them.

Can you ask her what she prefers? I quilt over my applique but have seen people that would never do that. Only she knows which way she prefers it.

It would easier to discuss if I had a pic to look at.
I have seen quilting in flowers and animals to enhance the design. But I don't like the method of just randomly quilting over them, like an all over stipple pattern. I think it distracts from the applique, but thats just me!
Look back at some of the gorgeous quilts the pros have posted on here, many of them have applique.
And I think the suggestion to ask the maker is a good one.

I have ripped out all the stitches in the second row of pantograph and today I will start again. I didn't think I should quilt over the applique, guess I was thinking at the time. I will echo the appliqued flowers and then carry on with the pantograph pattern on the patchwork blocks. Thank you all for your input. Sometimes we just need alittle encouragement and confirmation in what we are doing.
