Default Quilting with embroidery machine.

I have a baby lock ellisimo gold. I have quilted some smaller pieces on it with no problems but my cousin is quilting a quilt with a flannel backing and the thread is breaking very frequently. I have changed to a large needle and tried different thread but can't seem to correct the issue. I loosened the tension as we'll. Any suggestions appreciated.

my first guess would be the weight of the quilt-it will really need to be supported as it moves under the needle. Are you using a hoop and emb. design or FMQ?

Hoop and design. The quilt is well supported on quilting tables. I suspect the flannel is the problem.i don't use it and never had an issue, but I don't have a lot of experience quilting with this machine either.

Are you using the sewing function or the embroidery function?

Can you 'slow' the machine speed down? If so I would try that.

You might want to add a layer of water solvable interfacing under the flannel if you think the flannel is the problem. I quilt on my embroidery machine but just basic squares or frames.

OK, i have only done crib-sized quilts with a hoop and design. I did find I had better results using a wash away stabilizer on the back and making sure there was no drag on the quilt as the design stitched out. I use a simple outline from Emb. Library and have been happy with the results

I have done some big quilts with my embroidery machine and have never used a stabilizer. I have embroidered on flannel and not had a problem, but I ALWAYS slow the machine down.

I did slow it down as low as it would go. We finished it yesterday and it went much better. Have no idea what made the difference. ..experience maybe.

Glad it worked out for you. I have several quilts I want to embroider/quilt -- they are ready to go -- I'm not!
