There where a couple of topics about quilts that have been done with the embroidery machine.

Do you use any kind of stabilizer like you do with ordinary embroidery? How do you manage that a big quilt is moving freely?

Any answer would be highly appreciated. Maybe somebody could even take some pictures.

I have a few quilting designs on my machine. I think it maybe be for quilting as you go. I think the weight of the quilt would somehow mess with the hoop thingy.

I just hooped the quilt loosely and kept moving it...elibrary has some nice designs that are just a single pass with the thread....not real heavy. turned out good but a lot of moving around

I don't use stabilizer. Your batting and batting add enough to the fabric to hold those stitches without shifting.

To help the quilt move freely without getting caught on the corners of the table, I put my machine on the floor. The arm moves freely and the quilt moves well with it.

Measure well the center of the block for placement of the design. When you turn on the machine the foot usually goes to the center of the hoop and the design moves from there. If you mark either with a pin or a little mark where the center of the block is, you are telling the machine where you want the center of the design to be, and the machine will tell you if it can be done or if it needs to be rehooped.

I do nearly all my quilting on my husqvarna/viking Diamond. If you have capabilities to connect your machine to your computer, you can find lots of quilt designs on disc. I jut got a John Deer with feathers and all sorts of great designs. You can buy the sticky back stabilizer,hoop it, cut out a center opening, and stick your quilt to that and quilt away. My Diamond has an extra long needle bed for ease of quilting. I just roll it up and off I go. You don't need stabilizer if you have more than one layer of fabric. Use a quilting needle in your machine, and change it often. Enclosed are 2 pictures of table runners I did on the embroidery machine. The butterfly is stippled, and the other one has a flower design.

You said to use a quilting needle. Is that for embidery machine? I am not sure where to buy a quilting needle for an embroidery machine.

I use Schmetz sewing machine needles. They carry embroidery needles with a red band on the shank. They carry quilting needles with a green band. Klasse carries them too. It will specify on the package what it is used for. Be sure and check your manual to see what your machine requires. I think now most machines use the same. nancysnotions.com carries them.

You can hoop or use a sticky back stabilizer.
I like to use the hoop basting stitch too as an additional measure :D:D:D
