I use this method for one to three yard pieces. For longer pieces I use a 12 by 20 piece of cardboard. Makes it twice as wide so it still looks good with the other folded pieces. For fat quarters and pieces under five yards I use the 3 by 24 ruler. Works great!

I do the same thing, except I fold the fabric in half first instead of last.
