I have an APQS long arm. It doesn't have a stitch regulator. My question is "Should I get one for it" or "buy a Bernina 830 that has one" plus it does Embroidery (not a long arm). In the past I have hooped a quilt in my 630 embroidery machine and got good results. OR, another question, "is there a program out there that would fit my long arm, that is all programed so I wouldn't need a stitch regulator. I hope that I haven't gotten you totally confused. It's just that I'm contemplating something that's going to cost me allot of money. I just need to make an intelligent decision.

yes there are computer run system that can be put on your long arm and you do not need a stitch regulator. There are many with different price points and options

I've got the 830. I love it. But it would be much cheaper for you to get the stitch regulator for your longarm. I LOVE my 830, but there's no way it compares to a longarm. In fact, I'm planning on getting a longarm when DD moves out.

Just practice and you can save the money you'd spend on a stitch regulator on fabric and thread. Turn your speed down a little and practice!

I have both... adore both... and wouldn't even DREAM of quilting on my 830 when there's a longarm nearby! There's simply no comparison.

You can add a stitch regulator, or even computerize your current setup.I would love to add an IQ to my APQS, but so far I just can't justify the cost.

If you have been using your machine long enough to have a consistent stitch, then you won't like a regulator and would probably outrun it. If you want a computerized system, then I'd recommend the Intellistitch. Very good reviews and support.

i think in the 8 years i've had my long-arm i've turned on the stitch regulator twice- maybe 3 times- i absolutely HATE It! i'm one of those people who dont think you should use (cruise control) until you have good control on your own. that's just me- many many quilters out there would not consider trying to quilt a quilt without the regulator on-
maybe you could visit someplace that would let you try a machine out with a regulator so you can see what it;s like to use one-then you could decide.
i have read that if you plan to do (big show) quilts you need the regulator- the judges are very picky about all the stitches being consistant.

i freehand everything and actually vary the size of my stitches on purpose sometimes to add texture- movement- and different design features.
