So, I had someone ask me if I could make them a vest out of raccoon fur. I think I could do it, but I don't know if I really want that type of stuff going through any of my sewing machines.
Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Is it gross or something that should be done by hand?
I've seen they go for up to and over $1000 when made by furriers.
Any comments or suggestions?

Treadle machines handle this beautifully. If you don't have one of those then use a tear away paper to ensure the fur doesn't catch in the machine, but it will work fine. The paper or tissue or whatever you wish to use is just for uniformity sake in moving through the machine.

Pics when you are done would be great.

I think that when finished, remove the paper, and take a very fine crochet needle and pull most of the fur out of the seams. That way most of the seam will disappear. If you'll look closely at some fur coats, the seams seem to blend in and are not too easy to find, especially in the more expensive ones.
Works for fake fur teddy bears too.
