I was wondering anyone who's done a rag quilt what size blocks did you use? I have some charms 5x5 but I think those are too small. What are your thoughts or suggestions. Thanks

I have always used 7 or 8 inch blocks but I don't think there is any right or wrong size. You would have alot of seams with the smaller blocks but that just gives you more fringy edges.

I've done 5" for a baby quilt out of flannel and 8" for a couple of lap quilts. If you use .5" seams, then your finished block would be 4. All I know is, the smaller the block the more clipping to do. Lots of seams with that small a block if the quilt is very big! :-D :-D

i have done 6 inch but lately i like 10 inch squares!!!!! i made eight quilts since the first week in december. five of them were 5 squares by 7 squares, two were 5 squares by 5 squares (one for a baby and one for my cat to lay on!) one was 7 squares by 7 squares and am working on another one 5 X 7. it is true the bigger squares mean a lot less snipping. as you can tell by my screen name i LOVE rag quilts!!!

when i wanted to use some charm squares i sewed them together into 4-patches then used those squares for my raggy quilt blocks...so i had 9 1/2" blocks to start with. turned out great doing it that way. i usually use around 9" blocks, but i've made raggy quilts with 3" strips too; i sewed 3" x 15" strips together (raggy style) into blocks....6 strips per block then turned them in different directions when assembling.
get creative...it can be very fun to see how it comes out.

It is a matter of preference, like so many things are. I prefer a larger square 7-9 inches, but the smaller squares would be fine.

make four patch blocks first, then do them as "rag" quilt blocks.

That's a good idea. I have a couple of charm packs I can sew together to make a 9" square and the go from there. Thanks for the tip.
