I made a rail fence last year for my son and I used 4 colors: white, pale blue, medium blue and dark blue. I arranged the colors from lightest to darkest. But really, it's up to you and what you think looks best. The shades of purple will be nice.

Like your inspector and your color choice. I don't think changing the colors would make a difference either. Am watching to see if there is a correct way.

Here's another suggestion. If you are strip piecing, cut your strips out and lay them out on a neutral surface in the order you think you want them. Lay some going in each direction and weave them like the finished quilt will look. If you don't like it you haven't sewed anything and you can still change it. Does that make sense?

Yes, Darren, thanks, this does make sense. I will be starting the purple quilt as soon as I sandwich and quilt another charity quilt top I just finished. And laying out the strips really will give me an idea of where I am going. Purple is my favorite color and this quilt will be for me. I don't want to make it and then decide I wish I had done it differently.

I like it the way you've done it... I think the white in the middle puts more separation between the pink and green which makes them pop more.
When I want to see how a quilt will look, I 'draw' it up in MS Publisher (could also use PowerPoint). It's easy with squares and rectangles.

Love it, you did great. Looks good to me and I would have put the white in the middle too. I did a three rail fence and loved it. It is a great pattern and easy to do.
