I donated some items to a quilt retreat once & also found this company that was willing to send little sample packages of English Paper Piecing. Each packet had fabric, templates & instructions to make some hexies.

You might contact them & see if they still do this.

What a fantastic site - just what I had been looking for! Great free patterns and good prices for the hexie papers!
    Thank you, thank you!

Lots of good ideas here....thanks ladies. Dunster if you want to come to the retreat you are welcome. It is located in Canada 2.5 hours north of Spokane Washington. If anyone wants to come let me know and I will send more info. Cost is $60.00 for 5 days and you can stay in the camp for free....or if you are not into camping the hotel about a mile away is $65.00 a night and if you book for a week you can get a better deal. The camp has cots with mattress and if you want to stay there....some of the girls do....I will supply the bedding. Just let me know if you can come and I will send you all the info. Dates are Sept. 9-13 & 14-18 Few spots left, but will accommodate you if you are able to come Let me know ASAP

Dunster I know you were joking...but I am not.....Open invite for 3 more people.

No it is $60.00 for 5 days, but you must also supply food & cook lunch and supper with another person for 1 day. That is one of the reasons I try to have an even number. Also why I look for bargains and free. Not much left after rent. In fact I don't make any money...contrary to some. I enjoy doing this and that is why I do it. PM me if you want more info

Here is a fun activity to do at retreats for goody bags. Everyone brings a plain brown bag with quilt items or item in it and all are set on a table. Each retreater draws a number. # 1 selects a bag first then #2 and so forth. I would have a few extra in case someone gets a crappy bag.

Scissors lanyard, glasses cases to hold rotary cutters (from thrift stores), check book cover. I made a cool sewing case from a $ store placemat. Fold up long side about three inches, divide into pockets, add small flat pincushion, a flap for a small pocket to hold needles. Add ties on one end so you can roll it up. Cheap and useful.

Stilletto's are a good idea, but you can buy a big pack of the short wood skewer's for next to nothing and give everyone their own. Something similar to this http://www.webstaurantstore.com/4-ec.../4854SKEW.html

I love the idea of using the dollar placemats to make a sewing mat/tool storage area. Take 3 and make 2 of them as door prizes. I'm thinking, 1 whole one to go under machine, then cut the other in half, sew the cut part to the inside, turn it and then make pockets. Should be very quick.
