I've made a top that is 102 x 116

I want to send it out to be quilted

How large do I need to make the backing?

I've heard that 2 inches around is adequate - so the backing would be 106 x 120?

Please advise.

I Think most longarm quilters want at least 4" all the way around

In this area (New England), most want the backing and the batting to be 6" larger than the top. So yours would need to be 108 x 122. I suggest you find a longarmer to do the quilting and ask her what she would like for the extra length and width to load it on her machine.

I only ask for 3" extra on each side (total 6"per side and 6" per top, but you need to check with your quilter because some I know that want more than 3".
