I have found that some fabrics ravel a lot more than others, and they're usually the fabrics with a looser weave. Homespuns do this a lot. I wonder if starching helps prevent the raveling. Fray check works for applique, but you wouldn't want to put it on every seam in a quilt.
When I buy a Jelly Roll or Charm Pack, the edges are always pinked. I have had no problem lining them all up, and once you decide if the 'peak' or the 'valley' is where you are going to measure your 1/4" seam from, there will be no problem at all with that. Personally I like the pinked edges because I hate the raveling!

I have used the pinking cutter before washing fabrics and it works great for that. Is that what you meant?

One of the reasons I like to starch my fabric before cutting.

This sounds like good advice for me, also. I have been thinking about buying the pinking rotary but now know it's probably not a good idea of a good investment.
