Default Round Baby Quilts???

I saw a post recently where a woman had made a baby quilt by joining wedges of scrappy fabric together to make a round circle and then appliqued over the hole left in the middle.
My question is: that she used a special template made of plastic for this but I am not sure I want to buy one for just one quilt - especially if I don't care for it when I am done piecing it together. Is there a way to make a cardboard template to use instead?
I make a lot of quilts for a charity and don't want to invest money that I could put towards batting instead.
Thanks for your input!

You could just make a 9 or 10 degree wedge template and try it.
