I guess I define scrappy as fabric that was not purchased for the current quilt project, and is from fabric that was already used in a prior project.

Don't throw your scraps away. I save all the bits I don't want and give them to the local school so they can use them in collages. The kids and the teachers love it.

And I always consider color/value placement.

I toss out scraps. With no guilty feelings. I have enough carp in my sewing room.

I am in the process of making my 1st true scrappy queen sized quilt. The only rules I've given myself is that I don't want 2 of the same fabrics too close together. They are all truly scraps- leftovers from other things. I've discovered that most of the scrappys that I like have some element that "ties" them together. Want I am doing is scrappy squares & sashings. The sashings are pieced with solid cornerstones forming stars & I like this as the element that ties it together & draws your eye away from all of the different fabrics. I was being over run with scraps & this has been a fun project so far.
