Default Sewing with Plastic?

Aside from quilting, I make vestment for Infant of Prague statues and I've been inundated with requests for plastic covers. Not my personal taste, but to each his own! So ... armed with a Joann coupon I purchased some plastic sheeting for making (ugh) furniture covers (again, to each his own). The statue covers should be fairly easy to make, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for the type of needle and thread to use. Thanks in advance.

I have sewn a bit with vinyl. If you have a teflon foot or roller foot it helps. If not, try covering the vinyl with tissue paper and sew thru that. It seems to stick a bit when you sew without it. I use my regular thread and needle.

I am not sure how or what your pattern will be like but all the garment cover/bags that I have are the ones that the seams are put together with cotton seam binding at the seams. The seam binding encases the raw edges and it looks like that is how they were sewn together too? Any other plastic things sewn without it the seams rip out. Just a thought.

Bakermom, thanks for the tissue paper tip. I don't have a teflon foot, so that will be helpful. Tartan, I was thinking of using rickrack trim on the edges extending a bit.

I would also use a longer stitch length.

Thanks, Donna. As soon as I'm done with all my Christmas quilts, I'll start experimenting and will post photos.

old upholstery tip...teflon foot, if available; long stitch, at least a 5 or 6...fewer times you puncture the plastic, the better; binding is nice unless they're gonna be subjected to weather; and if the foot still drags or the plastic tries to 'ripple'.... put a drop of machine oil in front of the foot and smooth with your finger along the seamline...it is lightweight and the excess will wipe right off. Oil softens the plastic anyway ...won't hurt it...

ps...when possible, i use darker thread, navy, hunter or brown...the thread is the only thing that will look bad when the cover gets dirty...plastic will wipe right off and the thread will just get grungy.....
