That's a good question Margaret. I would like to know what everyone uses for stitch length also. I have an old Kenmore 1975 to do my piecing work, so the stitch length is not metric like the new machines. Anyone out there know what a good stitch length is for the metric & also for the older machines like mine?

I just use the same stitch length I've always used for sewing clothes. I use a 2. My stitches don't show after I've pressed the seam to the side, so I guess it's tight enough for my needs on my machine. I don't have a clue about metric. LOL I've only ever owned older machines.

I use the default stitch length on my machine; what it's computer is set at when I first turn it on....2.5 It seems to work well. Smaller stitches are stronger of course, but to be honest takes longer to rip out when you mess up..which I do a lot more than I'd like.

I stitch mine a little tighter than that, especially if I am strip piecing and know that more cutting is involved.

For regular piecing, I use 2.5....or on my OLD Singer, about 12-14 stitches to the inch. When paper piecing, I drop down to 1.5 so I can tear the paper off easier. On the OLD machine, maybe 20-22 stitches to the inch, something like that (I don't think I ever did any paper piecing on it!)
