I can't imagine anyone wanting a tote bag that you can't wash but like the others I sure would ask your friend first.

I did it, I washed the fabric and it is fine. I don't know why I was so worried. Two of five bags are made. Thank you for all the help.

I would cut off a small square, zig zag the edges, measure it, and let it go through a cold water wash, dry, then measure again to check results.

I would talk to your friend before doing anything. I wash 100% cotton drapery fabric all the time. It has been so long since I have been to the dry cleaners I had to look one up online last time I used one. I would measure one fabric and prewash and dry it and see what happens to it. If it was one I would prewash all of it and throw it in the dryer.
