Singer s18 same as Janome 6500?

I promise not to hog the board, but I'm new and do have a few questions!

I was all set to look into a Janome 6500 today when the dealer told me that the Singer s18 is made for Singer by Janome. They look and felt exactly alike, only the card that shows you the stitches looks different.

I've read on this board that Singer isn't a favourite, but I'm wondering if this machine is made by Janome could it be a contender? It's less expensive than the Janome 6500 and money is a consideration.

    Any comments appreciated.

    Thanks! Watson

There was a time when Singer was the best. They made all their own machines, and they wouldn't let another brand be put on them. Now Singer is putting its own brand on a machine built by Janome? How times change. This article talks about the Singer s18 - http://www.best-home-ideas.com/2014/...io-review.html. It looks like it would be a good purchase.

It's getting good reviews and as far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with a Janome built machine.

The Singer doesn't look like it has as much throat space as the 6500, even though the info says they have the same amount. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra money and get the 6500, I'm just leary about new Singers, regardless of the reviews.

Be sure to compare all the features on both machines just to make sure you are not going to be disappointed later on with if the harp is smaller. I still quilt with a 7" harp and it is not a problem for me.

Thanks for posting this. I own a Janome 6500 now for 10 years and run it hard nearly daily. This sure looks like the same machine.

If Singer is putting their name on a Janome machine then it appears it is no longer a Singer
and why would Janome put Singer on one of their machines and sell it for less.

I have heard that Singer is the most recognized trade name in the world, even more recognizable than Coca-Cola!
