I just saw an appliqued quilt kit in a quilter's magagzine, and it looks really cool. They've just stitched the piece down, leaving (looks like) about a quarter-inch RAW. It fuzzes up when it's washed and has a very different appearance.

Did it look like it was done in cotton or was it too hard to tell? Sounds interesting. What magazine was it?

It's on the same line as a rag quilt. You cut you applique larger, and snip the edgeing. You can use all most any applique you want, just cut it 1/2"-3/4" larger.
