I would just use what you have, I have on occasion used several pieces to splice a border. I have been reading a book about borders and they say if you haven't enough fabric for the border, make blocks on the ends or in the middle or elsewhere. This is another choice.

I always join my borders, sometimes more than once. With diagonal seams they are hardly noticeable.

Thanks, everyone. i'm going to piece the sides. I experimented with one side and put the seam next to a block that's the same color. It blends just fine.

Go with the original fabric. But make sure you use the new fabric on something for you too, don't just leave it in your stash!

Joint the pieces and keep the larger cut that you love for your own use. Selfish? No! What would you do with all of the pre-cut border? Use it on the piece your lovingly planned for you friend. Few people will notice the splicing of your binding.

I guess I don't understand not wanting to piece borders, unless it's imperative -- for some reason I can't think of -- that each border length be one continuous piece.

Quilts are made up of seams, after all. Seams in blocks, seams attaching blocks, attaching rows, attaching borders. Seems (pun slightly intended ) that this is what makes up a quilt. Seams in borders don't bother me, as long as they are not awkwardly spaced.

I do this, too. I think it looks as good as the diagonal and is probably stronger.

Since you have already cut your border pieces, I would just go with it - many times I have had to piece borders because I didn't have enough to cut the border from the length of fabric. Since you love the fabric so much, why not make a special quilt for yourself, you're worth it.
