My mom had that problem for years - took gelatin etc - nothing seemed to help. She had alzheimers, so she lived with us for 2 yrs before she passed- I amde sure she took a multi vitamin, Vit C & E besides her alzheimer meds - her nails grow beautifully - long and strong - yes did file them one way and she loved when I gave her a manicure

Good advice above...also try using gloves to do any dishes by hand. Since I got married last summer I have my hands in dishwater half the time and it shows, stronger nails.

Mim, the doctor told me the same thing. Well, insulted I was as I know I am 70 but don't feel it so now, I am so glad to be reading here to see that others have the same problem and there are more solutions to finding out how to deal with this. WalMart here I come looking for information for nails. I use to have beautiful nail when younger but then we also have to realize there are others older than me out there and they have beautiful nails. The Endo doctor told me it is probably from the heart attack and that I am a diabetic and have a goiter in my neck. So, just pick one and I need to find out how to fix this on my own and save a lot of money. Thanks again for this article.

A year ago, I began taking Vitamin D3, above and beyond the calcium with D. After a few months I noticed an improvement in the hardness in my nails. Now, I actually have nails that DO NOT split. It took awhile, but worth it. Your doctor will probably tell you to go ahead and try it. God bless, Joan

I have arthritis but can't take NAIDs so after searching the web decided to take krill oil to get mega doses of omega 3. I've been taking it for about 2 months now and there has been a little improvement in the painlevel but the bonus has been my skin, hair and nails have become so much improved. In cold weather my lips and fingers usually split, the nail shatter and my hair becomes brittle. Not so this winter - I don't feel the need use body lotions, hand or face cream, though I do for extra protection against the icy winds we're having at the moment. It's been a side effect that has been so welcome that I will carry on with my krill oil and hope that my back, hips and knees will respond soon. Hoping you all have a wonderful, blessed Christmas and best wishes for the new year.

I have had best part of a year with split nails due to anaemia. Since taking a course of iron tablets from my doctor the problem has resolved. It's worth checking this out with your GP.
