Which comes first... hen or egg?

This is my first post here, although I've been reading for months. Since I'm relatively new to quilting...here's my question for you "seasoned" sewers out there:
Do you pick your fabrics first and then find a pattern, OR choose a pattern and then shop for fabrics?
I have always had a pattern and then chose fabrics. My current project (twin size bed spread for my daughter) is the reverse, and I'M STUMPED as to what to do with 4 solids and one print. My daughter picked the solids (she refused to even look at prints!), & I managed to find a print the went with all of them.
Do I keep searching for a pattern or start over buying fabrics, and put these in my stash?

4 solids & one print - now I need a pattern!

We all have different ways of working - fabrics first or pattern first. I tend to buy fabrics that I like (and that are on sale!), then when I find a pattern I shop from my stash. Other people buy the pattern and then shop for fabrics. (The only time I shop for the fabric after I have a pattern in mind is for a OBW.) Do whatever works for you. Of course when you're just starting out, it may be easier to decide on the pattern first, and then get fabric for it. In any case, you have a lot of suggestions for the fabrics your daughter picked out, and that print ties them together nicely.
