    Default Square size?

I'm really confused. I was on Pinterest, found a zigzag quilt that looked interesting so clicked....site called schnitzel&boo......a tute from 2013. She instructs to cut 2 1/2" strips, sew 2 together, then cut at 4 1/4" to make a square. She instructs to sew that strip seam at 1/4", so wouldn't that give one a 4 1/2" width strip and therefore cut at 4 1/2" to make the square? Yet in her pics her strip seems to measure 4 1/4". ?????? Do I need another cup of stronger coffee?

edit...if you go to website. Her tutes are way at the bottom..called zigzag quilt, sort of yellow and black print......

I think that's bizarre. You can see very clearly from her picture that her original width is 4.5", yet she's cutting the strips at 4.25". I would email her and ask her why.

6 years ago I made a chevron quilt, using the same technique, only I cut my strips at 4.5" so they were square. It came together fine.

It has to be 4 1/2", or it just won't work. Look at this tute.

When you cut squares from a strip set, you have a target square size, but what you need to do is press, then measure the strip set. Whatever the width comes out to is the length you use to subcut. If your seam allowance is off, measuring will compensate. She either has a typo in her comments (perfect seam allowance would be 4 1/2) or she sewed, then measured and her seam was too generous.

    Here's her tute - http://www.schnitzelandboo.com/2013/...zag-quilt.html

Someone else asked her the same question and she stood by the 4 1/4" reply, so apparently either her strip sets were cut incorrectly, or her 1/4" seam was off.

As others said, the blocks have be to square, so if your 1/4" seam is accurate then cut at 4 1/2". I cut my strips 3 1/2" and my squares/blocks at 6 1/2".

I have seen mistakes like that in some quilt instructions. You just need to see if the measurements are correct or if you need to cut so they can be trimmed to turn out like you want.

Thank you Krisb for the link for how to make a chevron pattern with no triangles. I like that its jelly roll friendly.
