Do you square your fabric from the salvage edge or? I have seen so many fabrics that the pattern is not square with the salvage edge, so should you square with the pattern of the fabric or the salvage edge? Thanks to all. I know this is the place to ask and I will get the right answer. Diane

Well I square from the salvage edge but I have found that it can not be perfectly straight so I eyeball it first.

I like to fold material over in half. sort of shake it. Sometimes it does not meet at the selvage, That is OK, I cut the sides to be straight. I've found that in folding over not all salvages meet. Guess what works for each as long as material lays nice and flat. :)

I cut the sides to be straight also, most often the salvage edges do not meet

I always match the salvages. You move them from side to side until the fabric has a nice U fold. This gives a nice straight cut with no V. However, if there is a definite pattern to the fabric, checks, squares, etc. this will not look pretty when you cut it. So you have to decide how important the straight cut is.

I agree this is how I do it. Its always tough when the fabric is not printed on the straight.

depends on the pattern. if an all over non directional design in the fabric then I will square from selvedge to selvedge but if it has a pattern then I will cut according to the pattern even tho it won't be perfectly square. The fabric I have a problem with shops is wide fabric for backing. It is always cut then I loose sometime 6 inches on both ends when squared for the backing. I try to get the shop to tare the fabric. Usually they don't want to and say they add to compensate for it and then i point out they are loosing those inches
