I do not quilt for money----just myself and charity. If possible I always pin the top and bottom of the backing using the selvages. I have ripped down the sides. I then roll is a bit so the batting and top are a inch or so down from the selvage. Sometimes it is little wonky when rolling just the backing and if you roll it back an forth a bit it will straighten itself out.

I do not prewash the backing. I have no idea if a professional would approve of this method but it works great for me.

When you discover your fabric is not straight on grain you can play tug of war diagonally corner to corner with it until it becomes straight.

Evie, that is really bad! It looks like you lost about 12 inches of usable fabric.

As a side note, I got back my quilt from the long armer, with regards to this question. Since I had to take a second backing (minky was not wide enough), I had to prepare a second backing while the top was at the long armers.

I asked her not to trim the quilt, so I could see if the backing was completely square after long arming, (since i had ripped it and used selvage for perpendicular side). To my surprise, the backing was completely square!

So this time, and for this fabric, ripping worked for squaring. I have to admit, I'm shocked.....
Creative clutter is better than idle neatness.
