Squaring Up Blocks

Squaring Up Blocks
Is squaring up a block the same technique no matter what pattern you use or would there be a different technique if it was scrappy as opposed to something like a Friendship Star (that has points that need to match) or a Log Cabin (with straight lines that should be equal distance apart)?

generally when squaring up- you find straight components in the block- whether straight lines (like a logcabin) or diagonal-like a pinwheel- line up lines on your ruler with lines of the block- if you are trimming a 12 1/2" block that is 13" you would trim 1 side & top by 1/4" then turn the block 180 degrees- line up again and trim the other side & top-
blocks with points you want to line up the 1/4" line of your ruler at the tip of the points and trim-so you still have seam allowances- you trim as little as possible to get your block square and have your seam allowances around the perimeter.
