I am old to quilting but new to stabilizers. I just discovered a fantastic stabilizer called Sulky Paper Solvy. I am doing and outline stitch on some pieces to go in a baby quilt and stitched on top of it and then put it in water. Fantastic! I never knew such a thing existed! I guess I need to get out and mingle more! :lol: It was around $8.00 for 12 sheets. Thats the best part of all. You can put it in the copier and copy a preprinted design to it. I thought that you had to sew w/out thread on the paper pattern then stitch and then hope and pray the paper comes off w/out ruining the stitches. I guess you can tell I don't get out among other quilters much. LOL I don't belong to auild and had never tried this, didn't know it existed until today. So I thought maybe somebody besides me didn't know about it and I'd pass the info along.

I don't get out enough, either. I am self-taught and know nothing but what I've learned here or in mags and books.
I have not gotten any water sol. stabilizers, yet....and I need to do that for putting on top of towels and things for my machine embroidery....(as suggested by friends here)

I looked at WM for some water sol. stabilizer the other day and didn't see any....
I looked on eBay.
Does anyone know what the average price is on the stuff? I don't wanna get ripped off...(it's water sol...not rip-away!LOL)

Listed at the bottom of the message board is a tag ....expertstitch.com...they have some info and you can go from there to check on Stabilizers. I do know you can get it in sheets or by the yard. I have some and it is a really neat thing,especially if you do a lot of machine embroidery...you can create your own little stitch on applique pieces...then attach them to hats, jackets ,etc.( even create lace for a quilt)

I got this stuff at Hancocks and it was $8.00. I just ran in and got the type I needed, didn't take the time to look at the others. They had quite a variety of them. But I went to their web site and typed in stabilizers and got nothing. So maybe they (Hancocks) doesn't sell them on their web site.

Vickie, was it wash away that just melted when you wet it or was it paper that came off very easliy when you wet it? Inquireing minds want to know!

Miranda, I bought the wash away at WM off a bolt, it's way cheaper than Solvy in the package and I like it better, it's firmer, but I don't think it would go thru the printer on it's own that's why I'm asking Vickie for details. Some of the tearaway doesn't tear away so easy, but maybe if it was wet....... I never thought of that.

This stuff dissolved before your eyes like gelatin sheets. Really cool, and yes it went through the printer just fine. I wasn't sure if it made a difference which side I printed on, directions didn't say, but this stuff worked just great. I can't believe that I've been doing it the hard way for so long! :-)

It worked just fine in our fax machine/copier last night at home last night. his is not an ink jet but relies on a film to print, but it worked just fine on it.

Check in fabric stores for the rinse away by Sulky - you can buy it by the yard. I've even ordered it by the bolt. For sticky-back stabilizers, go to JoAnn & visit their Viking/ Husquvarna dealer.
