How do I go about making a bow and tails for the back of bridesmaid dresses?? To make out of fabric not ribbon.
Any ideas appreciated.

See if this works..get a piece of string and tie it around a waist ( thats what you are trying to make right ) tie it in a bow and leave the tails the length you desire. You will now know how long you want it , then you have to decide the width. Buy your fabric. Go by your width and double fold on the fold......the end taper so they form a point like a ribbon or cut in V shape if you want that look. SHouldn't be too hard to do Good luck

campion, another way is to makea cloth "belt" around the waist and close it with velcro, or hooks and eyes, Then make your bow and play with it so that the loops are straight and not kitty cornered, atach this bow to the belt with velcro or actually tack it on to just one side of the belt to cover the belt closing. If it is tacked it will not come loose or be pulled out, etc.

I generally do the bow out of fabric. Use interfacing to give it body. Sew the bow so it can't come untied. Use snaps to attach it to the back of the dress.

I use matching fabric to make the bows. To add some "body" to them, you can use a layer of netting inside the fabric bow and talis. Some of the manufacturers do this in bridal gowns. I am a former bridal seamstress so I worked with a lot on dresses.

I insert a piece of dowl inside the tube/strip of fabric after stitching the long "ribbon" and I iron the seam open on the dowl. When I turn it on the right side the seam is easier to control for ironing. I, too, would make the bow separate and attach to the dress.
