Have never used startch but just made a back out of flannel scraps and was wondering if I use a lite startch if the basting spray will stick?
Thanks Gale

the basting spray may still work, but may not adhere as well if you starch your fabrics first.the sprays always work best when used on pre-washed fabrics with sizing, oils, chemicals removed. usually if you starch, fusable interfacings do not work. so ... if you plan to use basting spray, why do you want to starch too? just curious...i would just spritz with water if my fabric needed a good pressing before putting the sandiwich together with the basting spray and would not add anything to the fabrics (sizing or bleach) pre-washing is to remove these and to shrink/set colors...if you have a little extra you could put together a small sandwich with starched fabric and basting spray and see how well it works. it is my understanding there are big differences in basting sprays also, not all are created equal.

I used flannel on a back with basting spray only, and had to take out the quilting cause of all the puckering. I ended up spraying more basting spray than I normally use and also pinning it so the flannel wouldn't shift. Also quilted slowly and held material taught. Avoid diagonal stitching too. Good luck

I am finishing a baby quilt w/a flannel backing. After much advice on the board, I heavily starched my back before rebasting- my first attempt at quilting it resulted in puckers everywhere. Flannel needs the starch! I did not use basting spray with this project - I used a method also suggested by a someone on this board. Look for Sharon Schamber's quilt basting video on Youtube. It might look a bit odd but it worked great for me, and my second attempt at quilting this flannel is going great! Good luck with your flannel project!

I starch my backing and have used the spray basting on 2 quilts so far, and haven't had any trouble with the basting spray not sticking.

I had always used pins and spray until I watched this video a while back. It really works!

I never have had any trouble with starch & basting spray. But I have had trouble with the different basting sprays themselves. Bought a few cans of one brand and it didn't stick worth a darn! The kind I use now is great!! Won't buy any other kind.
