Default Stencils

I see these floppy plastic tinsels for quilting designs. How do you use these things? Do you use them to draw the design on the fabric?

Many stencils are used with a pounce pad. Pounce powder is placed in the pad and this ( chalk like powder) is then run across the stencil leaving behind the design to follow.

Our you can use a marker made to disappear or wash away.

There are a couple different varieties. Some are mesh and are made to only work with a pounce pad. With others you can use markers. The stencil description will tell you if it's a pounce variety.

I use either pounce or the markers. The pounce is quicker but rubs off... the markers take longer but then I don't have to worry about the markings disappearing on me

I use a pounce chalk marker but like Mayert says, it does rub off. You may just want to chalk one area or design at a time rather than the entire quilt.

I used them with the standard pink/blue water soluble pencils and because it didn't show up on some of the fabrics I had to go over it several times to darken it enough to see. I had to wash the quilt three times and still didn't get it all out. Since then I've found the washable markers by Crayola and erasable colored pencils by Crayola. I haven't tried the washable for marking stencils but they have worked for piecing.

I use stencils with a water-soluble graphite drawing pencil to draw the designs on my quilts through the lines of the stencils. They show up on light OR dark fabrics and wash out afterward. My pencils are by General usually.

I use Crayola Ultra Clean markers or a white dressmaker's pencil. Both of those make nice thin lines that stay throughout my quilting (ironing, starching, sewing, handling) & easily come out in the wash.

And yes, I use them either to draw applique patterns or quilting designs. For quilting, make sure to mark your top before layering your quilt sandwich.
