I'm "thinking" about making a scrap string quilt using a muslin foundation. Question: Do you always use a batting for these quilts? Has anyone every quilted one without using batting, or would it just be toooo flat?

You don't have to use a batting! It would make a nice summer quilt!

I did one and used fleece on the back, no batting. I didn't use muslin for the foundation though, just paper that was removed. Gave it to DH. she says that is one warm quilt!

I have done a couple on muslin and then use very thin batting. Worked out well.

My DGM made me one yrs ago and there was no batting in it. She used heavy fabric's in it so it's a good winter quilt. Unfortunatly it is falling apart due to the fact that some of the fabric's were polyester.

I think it would be a great summer quilt with no batting. I am making one for my son like that.

I just finished two w/only muslin for 'batting'. LOVE THEM!! As several have said they make perfect summer quilts. Currently making one this way by request for a take along quilt in the car for a young child. Want to make one for myself for summer someday.

I made a string bed quilt without the muslin foundation, and used an 80/20 batting. It does not feel too heavy to me, but I think it would be fine to make it without batting, especially if you use the muslin for foundation........sounds like a nice summer quilt to me.
