I LOVE both of my brother machines. However, if she is going to be quilting with this machine take into consideration the pictures at the bottom of this post. The difference is HUGE when trying to FMQ. The rounded throat space makes things REALLY tight. The squared space is much easier to move around in.
So my vote is for a brother machine with a squared throat space!

I bought a Kenmore Mini Ultra that I am very happy with. It is light enough to take to classes and I think it would be a good model for someone just learning to sew. It was $100 plus tax.

I love my brother machines...I have 4. the first two were from Walmart...never a problem....except the threaders quit working quickly...but not the motors.
Then I have a 4000D and a quilter's choice I think thats it.
Love them all...and a surger.
