I made this little top using machine embroidered blocks that I bought on ebay. I've never quilted embroidered blocks before, I couldn't find good pictures on the web of quilts done with redwork. Any Idea of how to quilt this? I have a longarm machine but have only done side to side designs.

I think you could do just about anything in the sashing and borders, but the girls are so cute, I don't know what to offer in the way of quilting around them but maybe going around them with straight lines like a couple of frames? I am sure you will get some more creative ideas :wink:

You could meander around the design within the white and red areas.

Here is an example of a small wall quilt I did that way.

I'm too much of a newbie to offer quilting advice but I will be listening closely. It's a great way to learn.

What a cute quilt. I would just do a border around the edge of the block. Let all that wonderful embroidery stand out on it's own.

I'm also curious as to how to quilt around the figures (which btw are gorgeous and the sashing is perfect). I wonder if echoing around the figures would be too distracting. Come on, you QBers who are more experienced. What do you think?

I would echo around the embroidery, then use some sort of fill for the remainder of each block. You could use stipple, McTavishing, wavy lines to mimic wind blowing, swirls or even cross-hatching. Too many options to list. Some of it depends on your quilting level of expertise. But whatever you decide, the quilt is lovely.

I think hearts and flowers are perfect for this quilt, myself. Hearts around the sunbonnets and a continuous line of daisy chains on the borders. Then again you could do an all over pretty design. Depending on how much work you want to spend on the quilting part of it.

Have you ever read the book, "Machine Quilting Solutions", by Christine Maraccini? She goes into lots of information about quilting. The hows and whys of qulting. The reasons for lots of quilting or just a little.

The other one that is good is an older one that you might be able to check out of the library. "Quilt IT", by Barbara Chainey.

BTW sewnsewer ... I love that santa quilt wall hanging. So nice.

I embroidered some larger Sue's from a prestamped pattern, and it showed the quilting lines already on the stamping, or I wouldn't have known what to do at the time. I liked that they didn't really distract from the embroidery. I used a decorative stitch around the edges. Here's one of the blocks...

Many thanks to all the great ideas girls! I like the outline/shadow arround the embroidery and I think I'll crosshatch the background. I bought some 3/4" blue painters tape this afternoon and am going to mark with it. For the sashing I might get up the nerve to do daisies and/or hearts. I'll post a photo when it's done (if it isn't too bad) :? Thanks again to all, Mary
