Can I use fat quarters, and if so how....It calls for 1/2 meter of each fabric (24 fabrics) and you need 7 cuts @ 2.5". I have an awful lot of fat quarters and really want to use them up, the quilt size is aprox 98x96". would that mean I would need at least 2 each of the same fat quarter...hope not cause I only have one of each color...can someone who has made this help me with the math....All help is greatly appreciated......hummmmm I think if I was doing the math (which by the way I suck at) if I was to cut 14 strips @ 2.5" wide along the 18" side of the fat quarter wouldn't that work????Ok I just did some quick math and that won't work, so I'm quessing if I want to use fat quarters, I have to have 2 each of the same fat quarters which would mean a total of 48 fat quarters....am I correct in these figures????

I have not done "surf song" but have done the twisted bargello from that book, and don't think the fat quarters are long enough, even with 2 of each color. You need the length of about 42" for each of those strips--and fat quarters are only about 22" long--right? That would mean you needed not only double the width but double the length as well. I am pretty "math challenged" myself--but am thinking I would not want to take the chance to run out of fabric after all of that work.

I just finished piecing that top (yesterday), and you really need a WOF to sew the strata. Using the fat quarters, would over complicate things, and you would probably need more than 2 of each color, since not all of the final strips are cut to the same size. It is a beautiful quilt when its pieced though!
