I made 2 Bionic Gear Bags; one for hand sewing and another for my stuff when I go to guild. That one stays in my machine tote and goes with me.

I use one of those hanging cosmetic bags. Mine is about 2' long and has zipper compartments with plastic fronts. I can put the scissors, thread, bobbins, small rulers, pins, rotary cutters, .... I have had it about 16 years and it is still going strong. I keep it loaded so I can grab and go. I recently bought a folding ruler and folding cutting mat so I can use one of my totes.

Default My Longaberger sewing basket

Here are a few pictures of my very messy sewing basket. This is the small picnic basket - my other one is not easy to get to right now. (The delay was getting the pictures from my phone to computer. I was having a dickens of a time, then looked it up on Google. Not sure why I didn't do that days ago.)
Last time I took it with us on a trip, the bell boy wanted to put it on the cart with the luggage so I wouldn't have to carry it. And my DH told him if anything happened to my sewing basket I would become homicidal. So he didn't ask twice. :-)

I have a number of Longaberger baskets I use too. There is a tall heart shape basket on sale at the Homestead online I use for my mid-sized rulers.

January is organization month; so you'll see a number of stores with sales on totes and tubs. I see JoAnn's has a special right now. You may find something there. http://www.joann.com/home-decor-and-...161231E2#sz=90

I use a small rolling suitcase with swivel wheels. It hold my Featherweight, fabrics, and my threads/tools/accessories in snap lock containers. I can add my purse or a tote on top if necessary. Best way for me to get around after double knee replacements. 1 trip to and from the car, easy to get up the stairs.

Something that has helped me immensely, is a cheat sheet--I list everything that I could possibly need for my class and mark them off as they get packed. It comes in handy on the other end too, because I can check to be sure that I have everything that I brought with me.

I use a medium sized rolling suitcase. My featherweight, tools, rulers and plenty of fabric fits nicely. I also use a Sears Craftsman tool tote other times that comes in a variety of colors (even pink!), is sturdy, lightweight and has a comfortable foam handle. Lots of stuff fits and its easy to see things. There are pockets on the outside and ends, and loops on the insides that hold scissors and other tools up against the side wall. $14.99 I also have one for my golf stuff and another for toiletries for car/trailer trips.
