I have my 5" squares cut, but haven't started the 9 patch blocks.

Do I square the original 9 patch block, then square the four quarters, then square the final block? Or just the final block?

Thanks.

Hi,

I square each unit... Things line up so much better for me that way...Still goes rather quickly.. Enjoy the journey is my motto.

My philosophy is that whenever a block (or portion of a block) does not measure true, it should be fixed right then, not put off until a later step when it could be much harder (or impossible) to fix. That might mean taking out the seam and re-sewing it, or pressing it more carefully, or it might mean shaving a little bit off the edges. So the answer to your question is, it depends on whether your block NEEDS squaring at each step. If you started with 5" squares that measure true, and if you are sewing a scant 1/4" seam and pressing carefully, you may never need to square your blocks.

Ditto ... square "if needed" at every step of the process.

It's well worth the little extra time .... and makes for such a nicer finished project at the end.
