I seem to be having trouble with blocks that I am making. I tried to follow the directions, the block was suppose to be an eight inch block, but it turned out to be 8x9. What can I do? The block started with a 4 inch square, then I added 2 inch pieces around it. YOU CAN TELL I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM DOING!!!!

First two things I would check if it were me. First, I'd make sure the 4" squares and 2" rectangles cut exact. Then I'd double check my 1/4" seam. Make sure that's exact also.

so it should be 8 1/2 inches unfinished. (before sewn to other blocks).
you need to check your seam allowances and cutting measurements too.try again with scrap fabrics.

Always use the same ruler for a whole project. Sounds like there was an error in cutting, or your quarter inch seam is off. Gotta find out what the problem is before you go any further. That much off would mess up everything! :?

Are there templates/patterns included with the instructions?

Are you allowing for seam allowances?

When you say you are making an 8-inch block, is that an 8-inch FINISHED block?

If so, then the block-in-progress should be 8 1/2 inches before it is sewn to the other blocks.

If you are attempting to make an 8 inch finished block, the center piece should have been cut 4 1/2 inches square, the outer pieces should be cut 2.5 inches wide - this is to allow for the 1/4 inch seam allowances.

At any rate, good luck with your project.
