Eleanor Burns books are the only ones I buy anymore because she simplifies patterns.
My favorite is Stars For All Seasons. It is a single pattern that I picked up a Joanns with a coupon.
Made two quilts from it so far and love this pattern. She makes blocks a little oversized then invented a square up ruler that squares up with one cut or at most two cuts.

If I were to attempt to copy the ruler, I'd go to the Dollar Store and buy a school set from the Office Supply section. (The kit with a ruler, different angled triangles, a protractor and usually a compass). I would print out the paper pattern from Quilterscache, and I'd lay the right angle triangle from the Dollar Store over it. I'd mark the lines with tape. I'd use the paper pattern to measure the width of the strips of fabric, and I'd add 1/2 inch.
