Default Is there a tutorial on calculating fabric requirements?

I've decided to make a carpenter star. If I use 8 squares across and 8 squares down, I need 64 squares. If each square/or hst is 8".... and there's where I'm stuck.

I'm using this link as a guide on layout. But I don't know how to calculate how much of each of the 3 fabrics I need. I want to use my stash and need to make sure I have enough before I start cutting.

help please?

Haven't checked the links in Easy Peezy's response but I just always figure out square inches of fabric then divide out for yards. Plus a little extra for booboos.
