be quilted by a longarm quilter. Do you have special things that you look for in a quilter? Do you want the quilter to choose the quilting design? I am a longarm quilter for hire and here lately I have been doubting myself to the point that I am putting off quilting and the quilts are stacking up. I have asked my customers these questions and more, but thought I would throw this subject out here and see what others think. I would really like some feedback on what you dislike about a quilter.

I always let the person doing the quilting decide on the pattern to use. Sometimes I will specify a special color thread.

The LAQ I send the bulk of my large quilts to is local and we talk about what kind of quilting to do on the quilt - I usually take her suggestions or make very slight modifications. I know her work; it's good and I trust her.

I send all my quilts out to 2 fairly local women. Both do wonderful work.
I like custom work usually, and Janice Cutting has great taste so I have her decide on design; I select thread colour.
Martha Fleming does non-custom quilting for me. She can only do straight across patterns, Again,I specify thread colour.

I work in a LQS part-tiem and we do quilting there. Well I don't but some of my coworkers do..and more times than not..most people drop their quilts off and say...Do whatever you think is best and they just trust our people..good reputation! Rarely does someone say specifically what they want. So I guess you need to be confident in your work.

Do you know what got you skittish? Is it a feeling or was it a specific something (or person)? Those quilts are not sitting over there winking at you because you don't do good work.
Maybe it is 'one' of them you don't want to do more than the others. Is there one of them you 'do' want to do? If so, do it first and maybe it will help you.
If we were there we would hoist you onto our shoulders and take you into the sunroom, have a beverage of choice, give you hugs and make it al better. Then we would probably alllllllll go back to the sewing room with you and watch you thread that machine.
Hey, wanna do a LAQ tutorial? That would get one of the quilts done and I have never seen a long arm operate or operated.

My LAQ and I discuss options together. I do value her opinion greatly, but it feels good to have some input, especially as to the costs associated with various options.

I usually let my LA suggest what to do and then I will pick the thread color. She knows what she is doing and I don't!

I have never sent out a quilt to be quilt but I have a lady I take them to. I select the pattern to be use from a selection of what she has to offer. We too discuss the options and cost of particular one( More difficult vs easy). She will make her recomendation as she has the experience of knowing what looks good and what works. I myself would be scared to death to do another persons quilt. I would be so afraid the person would not like it and then what do you do. They have put so much work into their quilt and if they are not happy with the finished product it can change so much. Really I am not trying to discourage you just offering my opinion. Good luck to you and if you send me your information I could consider mailing out a quilt to be quilted.

I always choose the quilting patterns I want on my quilts, it's MY quilt after all, along with the thread colors. If my longarmer has suggestions about my choices, she'll tell me. She's a good friend of mine and is not afraid to speak her mind! ;) Even if she's doing custom work, we discuss it and I always know ahead of time what it will look like. It works out well for both of us that way.
