I have been rereading some quilting books that I bought years ago. One was devoted to applique and it said if you wanted the applique shapes to stand out a little more to use flannel and then attach it to the backing. This sounds like a good idea if you don't want a lot of thickness which you'd have by using extra batting behind the pieces. Has anyone ever heard of this method or tried it?

never heard of it, so never tried it, but it sounds like a good idea. my 2 cents on this topic is limited to advising a thorough prewash in hot water of any flannel used for anything. i don't even want to imagine the heartbreak of an appliqued project that gets all discombobulated because the "guts" shrank.

Patrice....you just made my day.......I haven't heard the word "discombobulated" since I was still living with my parents...my mother used that word all the time!!! Thanks for the chuckle and the memory!
