I have been using 50 weight Aurifil and Wonderfil mostly. I am just starting to experiment with some other brands. I like YLI and King Tut. I heard that Glide is awesome...bought some. but haven't tried it yet. The threads have different looks as well, some more glossy, some more matte finish. One day when I have some time to play, I'd like to make up a sample sandwich testing different threads. I will mark the thread details with a sharpie and keep it for reference.

For basic FMQ on either my vintage machine or my ordinary mechanical Brother I use regular coats and Clark cotton thread. I have used rayon on occasion.

I've decided that I like machine embroidery thread for my FM and have extremely pleased with the Metro brand that I use. They have great prices and fabulous service. http://www.metroemb.com/store/
