Ladies, what threads do you use. When hand appliqueing, do you use the same thread to apply the applique as you use to sew the blocks together. Do you use the same thread both top and bobbin. As you can tell, I'm new to quilting and I want to learn all I can from you.

For piecing, my favorite thread is Aurifil 50wt 2-ply. Sometimes I use an inexpensive 60wt polyester thread in the bobbin: http://www.amazon.com/Spool-Embroide...dp/B00BLWDWT2/ The reason for using fine thread for machine piecing is because it's easier to get accurate 1/4" seams.

I no longer hand applique. A lot of people like 100wt silk thread for applique or the SuperBob thread collections:

I like silk thread for hand applique. For piecing I usually use either grey or white Bottomline (60 wt) in both top and bobbin.

I use silk thread for hand applique- I use either aurifil or silk thread for machine applique- which ever one I have the correct color for (I generally just use a neutral cotton in the bobbin when machine appliqueing)

i use silk thread for hand applique... it's strong, thin, and disappears ... can't see it when done. most of the time for machine applique, i try to match the thread with the piece. but on busy ones, i use a neutral. however, some country looks require the same color all over. my bobbins are almost always prewound thing white thread... i've never had a problem with it showing through.

I have a lot of Sulky for machine applique. I have always used the same thread in the bobbin. Force of habit I guess. I also have a lot of Connecting Thread colors for just plain sewing.

I started out using silk thread for hand applique, and it is wonderful, but it's expensive, hard to find in small quantities, and I sometimes had a hard time finding a color that would work. So I started using Bottom Line and it is awesome. It sinks into the fabric as well as silk, is available prewound on bobbins (so I'm not buying hundreds of yards for a foot's worth of applique) and if you get one of those assorted-color donut packages, you pretty much get any color of thread you'll ever need.

I agree with Peckish. I have the prewound donut from Superior threads. They are great for handsewing when you need exact color to match but don't want to buy a big spool of one color. I like the YLI silk applique neutral thread set too.

Tks ladies. I never thought about purchasing quilting supplies at Amazon. Sorta like a super store! Where do you purchase Sulky and Bottom line threads? I've looked at Connecting Threads and thought about buying some but I wanted your input. The closest quilt shop is 50 miles away.
