Please do not send me to Etsy, Ebay or Artfire... I've already looked there...

I need to know what you think a good cost for a quilt top would be... I have two that I made that I'm going to sell... I'm going to make a couple more to sell.

One is 40X60
The Second is 48X64

Well... I just listed my french braid quilt that I am sick of looking at that's not quilted. I'm including the top, back, warm and natural (since it's already sandwiched) plus the rest of the jelly rolls and scraps for $60 including shipping. The size on mine is 48 x 57 1/2.

It just depends on how nice and intricate it is and how much it cost you to make it. If you post a pic of the quilts then maybe someone might be able to tell you how much it might sell for just by looking at the pattern. I would however make sure that you consider the money for the fabric. If you add up the cost of fabric and then add either 10-15 dollars for your time if it is a simple quilt top. you can always charge more depending on how nice you made the quilt. It is always about supply and demand, and where you are selling the quilt top.

My mom looked at me the other night when I was telling her what I planned to do.

Mom: People actually want to buy just the tops?

Me: Yes, some people like buy just the tops, then they add in their own batting and backing and put together and quilt it themselves.

Mom: And how much do the tops go for?

Me: Anywhere between $20 and $60, as far as I've seen on Etsy and Artfire.

Mom: Thats a lot.

Me: It's home made and takes longer than say something mass produced. You should see the prices of quilts that are home made and all put together.

Mom: Why?

Me: They cost way more... upwards of $250 dollars or more.

That was a fun conversation. I was jsut wondering what you guys would pay so that I don't over price or under price them. I'm doing this so that I can pay my way to Monmouth IL in the summer for a camp I volunteer for, they reimburse us for our travel expense. Plus we have a day where we go with our discussion group partner to get the extra's that we need. Last year Mom drove me there and drove me home, I had just enough to get what I had to... And that was only because I gave money for gas, had to pay for dinner on the night outing (my own dinner that is). Plus I also get a few things to keep in my room snack wise.

Plus we have this secret pal thing that we do for that week, and I want to make an ITI themed quilt... so I have to be able to get the fabric that I will need. The quilt will be based on things that pop up in our camp songs, Monkeys, Bananas, Moose... If i was able to find that scene from Singing in the Rain where Fred Astaire (I think thats who it was) is on the lamp post I'd put that in too! lol

I figured I'd make things and sell them on here, since it's so hard to get a job at the moment. Any money left over from this will be for school.

I would look at ebay or cragslist to actually sell them. A lot of time on quilting boards people like to quilt their own quilts. I would however get as much exposure for your quilt tops as possible. any place that you can sell is where I would sell them. Even if it means listing in a couple of places. With the exception of ebay. I would only do one or two on there depending on how many you plan on making to sell.

I would love to post photos... but my sister won't give me her camera's battery charger :( so, I'm forced to wait for mom to come home, complain to her about Katie not giving me her battery charger, and then get it... hehe...

I'm going to probably try and sell them on Etsy or Artfire, I have not decided yet. I'll post them on here too maybe, if I don't get any takers on the other sites.

My mom is trying to get me to get some stuff completed so that I could possibly sell some of it at her work. I told her I'll make couple of doll quilts for her to take, as samples. Then I'll make some big stuff and what not for her to take in the fall when the school year starts up (she drives a school bus). I'll theme them for Halloween and Christmas, and then over Christmas break I'll make Valentines day stuff. Mom suggested making a few quilts for gift giving... I told her we'll see though, I'm not a one woman sweatshop. But it would be good, even if all I'm doing is making money for school.

I also told her that if I have enough made, maybe I could do a craft show or something. She said that would be a great idea. I remember her doing one when I was little.

How comfortable do you feel with rotary cutting as far as accuracy? had to ask that first to preface the next sentence:) Instead of doing all the cutting, sewing, etc. how about selling doll quilt kits? you pick a simple pattern, cut out the necessary pieces, and write simple instructions to sell. Maybe gear them towards teaching kids to quilt.
