Cool Time to Think About Summer Quilts

My husband and I lived in Hawaii for 10-12 years and it was just too hot for regular quilts made with batting in the middle. I didn't quilt then, but once a year, we would buy a summer quilt from the local quilt shop. They were all made without batting, had flannel backing and were tied, instead of quilted. I suppose that, technically, they weren't quilts, but coverlets. Anyway, we had quite a collection of these, but now, we are down to one, lone survivor of those quilts. So, it's time to make some more.

I need some new themes for my new "coverlets." Maybe a tomato red and white quilt to match my tomatoes in my garden. How about a wildflower quilt? Maybe an aquatic theme. Ideas anyone?

I think of bright yellows, greens, pinks and either fruit or floral prints. And of course your ocean colors too

I was just over at the red rooster fabric site and there are some scrumptious patterns over there for free download. Make sure you check the retired patterns section too. I had forgotten how many fabulous ones were there to download.

Your so welcome. Thanks for the thank you. I wondered if anyone liked the site as much as I did.

oh wait...is there actually a time NOT to think about quilts??? I think it's more the color pallet that makes it "feel" like a summer quilt - "beachy" colors come to mine.
Of all the things i've lost, i miss my mind the most.

I totally agree. With parts of the U.S. under many feet of snow, bright colors would be the way to go !! It is already summer here in So CA.

A couple of years ago, I bought what I thought was a set of sheets for my Queen size bed. White with small pink rosebuds. When I got them home, I had a Duvey Cover. I took it apart and sent it to my LAQ and she added some lite batting and quilted it. I then had a beautiful lt. wt. summer quilt.

I love summer quilts! I keep a summer (lap size) quilt on my porch swing all summer long! It is the only one I made so far, but it is on my agenda to make more. It is a little something when you need it to cover up. I hope everyone will post pictures of their summer quilts when they get a chance.
